Die Entwicklung und Bearbeitungen von Softwarebestandteilen während des gesamten Lebenszyklus wird auf einer ALM-Plattform (Application Lifecycle Management) vorgenommen, während die Hardware in der PLM-Umgebung (Product Lifecycle Management) verwaltet wird. Das hat zur Folge, dass Bauteilinformationen und die dazugehörigen Softwarebestandteile in getrennten Systemen hinterlegt sind. Gründe dafür gab es bisher reichlich, z.B. Unterschiedliche Methoden und Vorgehensweisen, unterschiedliche Strukturen der zu verarbeitenden Daten und Metadaten, verschiedene Workflows und uneinheitliche Anforderungen an übergreifende Prozesse wie ein interdisziplinäres Konfigurationsmanagement (Cross Domain Configuration Management). Die getrennte Handhabung von Hardware- und Software-Komponenten führt allerdings zu dem bekannten „Silodenken“, sodass z.B. Benachrichtigungen über Änderungen, die gleichzeitig Software und Hardware betreffen nicht zwischen den Systemwelten synchronisiert werden. Manuelle Prozesse mit hoher Fehleranfälligkeit müssen dann wieder die Probleme lösen – mit bekannten Folgen für Qualität und Effizienz.

Doch wie könnten die beiden Welten – ALM und PLM – transparent und nachvollziehbar miteinander verknüpft werden, um Qualität sowie Durchgängigkeit sicherzustellen und die Effizienz der gemeinsamen Entwicklung zu erhöhen. Ein allwissendes „ALM-PLM-System“ ist wegen des enormen Migrationsaufwands, der Komplexität und der „zu“ großen Unterschiedlichkeit der Disziplinen nicht realistisch. Vielmehr erfordern die Disziplinen ALM und PLM einen ganzheitlichen Ansatz, um ihre jeweiligen Daten und Prozesse unter Zuhilfenahme eines föderativen Backbones zu integrieren. Dies erfolgt nicht in einem Schritt, daher muss abhängig vom gewünschten Zielzustand im Reifegradmodell und von der aktuellen Ist-Situation ein angepasster Maßnahmenkatalog definiert werden.
